As youngsters growing up in Barbados during the 1970’s and 80’s, before we could read or write, we were regaled with the exploits of Sir Garfield Sobers by the elders in our society. He was constantly talked about, he was sung about, and his mannerisms were imitated. We were emulating this great man long before we truly understood who he really was. Why was his influence so inescapable? In Barbados the sport of cricket was king and he was the king of cricket! Reading the encclycopedia and seeing his batting records gave us a sense of pride and dare I say, happiness, yet we never understood until years later, the enormity of what we read and herculean accomplishment it took for his name to be recorded there in the first place. The first person to give this little island and its people global recognition, a debt which we can never repay. Whether or not we played or even liked the game of cricket, every Barbadian citizen has stood on the shoulders of this great and loveable man! “Sir Gary”, we haven’t just began to acknowledge and appreciate you, this we’ve done from the time we could hold a bat or ball. You gave to us until you could give no more. We thank you for giving so much to us and we thank God for giving you to us! We have been extremely blessed because of you. May the face of our Lord shine upon you and may He grant you peace and eternal rest.
