Even among the pantheon of the Greatest of All Time, the late Rt. Excellent Garfield Sobers existed in the firmament reserved for the few who are not just the extraordinary best at their endeavours but who transcend that to transform their arenas and society for all time. Dubbed “Sir Garth” and “the Great Sir Garth”, long before he was knighted in 1975, Garfield St. Auburn Sobers was not just the greatest cricketer ever. He was the world magnet that popularized the game. He was the change agent for how the world saw those from Caribbean islands then embracing Independence. He was the Caribbean’s first pop idol, galvanizing and unifying regional people like no other and generating ecstasy whenever he graced the field. Everyone wanted to be like Garry. He was the embodiment of the excellence and character of the Barbadian. He was Barbados’ greatest ambassador. With the passing of the Rt. Excellent Sir Garfield St. Auburn Sobers, Barbados, the Caribbean and the world has lost one of its greatest gifts, one of a kind He will always remain an inspirational figure and symbol of how great any Barbadian or West Indian can be – a benchmark for all time, revered by all. As we give thanks for the life of the legend, Barbados would do well to embark on a full interactive history of his life for the the benefit of all, from primary school children to visitors.
