Sir Garfield Sobers was my father’s favourite cricketer. Growing up in Grenada in the 1970s, I vividly remember hearing your name spoken with admiration and excitement whenever cricket was discussed. I honestly do not recall whether you were still playing at the time, but it was during the golden era of West Indies cricket, when our team inspired immense pride throughout the Caribbean. My father, born in 1927, belonged to an earlier generation, yet your extraordinary talent and achievements brought him tremendous joy. Like so many Caribbean people, he followed your career with pride and saw in you a symbol of excellence, determination, and possibility. Your legacy extends far beyond records and statistics. Through your brilliance on the field and your influence on generations of young cricketers, you helped place Barbados, the Caribbean, and West Indies cricket firmly on the world stage. You showed the world what greatness from our region looks like. The pride, inspiration, and joy you gave to countless people will endure for generations to come. We are deeply grateful for your contributions and immensely proud of all that you accomplished. Rest in peace, Sir Garfield. Your legacy will live on.
