My wife and I were on a cruise from Southampton in late June 2026. While we were waiting for a show on the ship to begin, an elderly Indian gentleman sitting next to us asked where we were from. When we replied, “Barbados,” he immediately exclaimed, “Garfield Sobers!” When we told him that Sir Garfield was still alive, he excitedly called out to the rest of his group, telling them that we were from Barbados and that Garfield Sobers was still with us. His reaction showed us that Sir Garfield’s name continued to inspire tremendous excitement and admiration across the world. He was to cricket what Pelé and Maradona were to football—a true global icon and one of the greatest sportsmen of all time. May he rest in peace.
