Richard Gibbs

It is with a heavy heart that I write this tribute to a legend and sports hero known the world over. I regret that I could not make it to Barbados for the official ceremony in his honor. Sir Garfield Sobers was so much more than a great athlete. He carried a generosity of spirit and humanity about him that could light up any room and he seemed to make time for just about everyone. Growing up in a cricketing family in the Caribbean, there were many stories of his cricketing prowess, his uncanny ability as a fielder, the upturned shirt collar, his swagger and flair as a batsman … it was all captivating. No wonder he was a fixture in the movie “Wondrous Oblivion!” If anyone reading this hasn’t seen the movie, take a quick look: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nEWlqTes_p8. Sir Garfield, everyone in the West Indies will remember you as a person who inspired others through your resilience, determination and competitiveness. RIP, the Gibbs family sends their respects.
