I was named after Sir Garfield Sobers, and that has always been a source of pride for me. My dad was a huge West Indian cricket fan and a very proud Bajan, so naming me after one of Barbados’ greatest sporting icons meant a great deal to him. Growing up, I didn’t really know where my name came from. At school, people would often joke that I was named after Garfield the Cat, but I was always quick to put them right. I’d proudly tell them that I was named after the legendary Barbadian cricketer, Sir Garfield Sobers. Sir Garfield Sobers wasn’t just one of the greatest cricketers of all time—he changed the game forever. In 1968, he became the first player in the history of first-class cricket to hit six sixes in a single over, a remarkable achievement that cemented his place in sporting history. His incredible talent, versatility, and sportsmanship made him a true ambassador for Barbados, the West Indies, and cricket around the world. As a proud Bajan myself, it’s an honour to carry a name associated with such greatness. Every time someone asks me where my name comes from, I’m reminded not only of an extraordinary cricketer but also of my dad’s love for West Indies cricket and the pride he had in our Barbadian heritage. Sir Garfield Sobers is more than a cricket legend—he is a symbol of excellence, inspiration, and Caribbean pride. I’m proud to bear his name.
