They say emulation is the strongest form of flattery… and as a young would-be cricketer on the village greens and in my backyard, I flattered myself by trying to imitate The Right Excellent Sir Garfield Sobers. Though I am right handed, I tried to bat like him, even mimicking his signature pedal after punching a short ball off the back foot through the offside. Cricket was my first love, and Sir Garry was my boyhood hero. He filled me with pride, confidence, and a sense that if you prepare well things will fall into place. Years later, I found myself in the commentary box at Kensington Oval, sharing the same space with the man whose brilliance shaped my childhood dreams. I could hardly believe it. He was kind, gracious, humble, speaking freely sharing his vast cricketing knowledge, and carrying himself with the quiet dignity that defined him. Today, I say publicly… Thank you for the inspiration, the pride, and the example you set. Thank you for showing us what it means to be Barbadian… to refine your gifts, honour your roots and walk through the world with excellence and humility. Your legacy lives on in everyone of us who dared to dream because of you. Rest well, Sir.
